Waimea

Each By The Shore collection is named after the original inoa kahakai

(shoreline) across Ko Hawai'i pae 'āina.  After Western settlers arrived in Hawai'i, many places were renamed or nicknamed over time.  It is our aspiration to bring awareness to and perpetuate the native place names of Hawai'i . "I ka 'ōlelo nō ke ola, i ka 'ōlelo nō ka make."

The literal meaning of Waimea is reddish-brown water and applies to multiple places across the island chain.  It is the name of ahupua'a and shoreline on O'ahu, Kaua'i and Hawai'i island.  The wai (water) flows from mountain to sea and the run off from the red sediment in the soil gives the wai its reddish look and reason for its name.  Waimea Bay on O'ahu is famous for its massive waves in the winter months, but still the stream connects mauna to kai.
